Sequential Announce New Poly Synth: Take 5

Sequential have announced, on the back of a recent leak, the launch of their new analog poly synth, the small format (by Sequential standards) Take 5.

Sequential are a long-established and highly influential company, with their famous Prophet line of synths held in high regard since the late 1970s. Despite this rich history and standing within the industry, Sequential have managed to maintain a level of underground appeal, partly in thanks to their effortlessly cool founder, Dave Smith.

Usually pricing themselves at the mid-to-higher end of the market, with their instruments carrying a hefty price tag for the average consumer, the Take 5 is on the more affordable end of the spectrum – with a reported retail price of $1299.

This will be an encouraging sign for bedroom producers who’ve long had a Sequential dream synth on their wish list, and may indicate a move by the company towards a broader financial demographic.

The Take 5 is a five-voice analog poly synth, compact in size and with a utilitarian but nonetheless engaging aesthetic. We’ve complied a list of spec highlights below:

– Two analog VCOs & one sub osc per voice
– Continuously variable waveshape per osc
– Front panel FM
– Four-pole, self-resonating low pass filter (based on Prophet 5 design)
– Two 5-stage envelope generators with variable routing
– Two 5-wave shape LFOs, one global and one freely assignable
– Dedicated digital reverb
– Digital multi-effect featuring 3 delays, chorus, ring-mod, distortion & others
– Vintage Knob – Emulates vintage synth characteristics with fluctuations in oscillators, filters and envelopes
–  64 step polyphonic sequencer & arpeggiator

This list is by no means exhaustive, but it certainly indicates just how feature-packed the Take 5 is. Sound generation opportunities are plentiful, and the FX section (Vintage Knob in particular) is mouth-watering to say the least. The synth could benefit from more modulation options, but overall this seems like a seriously powerful instrument for a very reasonable price.
