Roland has debuted a new SH-101 inspired synth at Superbooth 23. The S-1 Tweak Synth is pocket-sized poly synth modelled on the classic 80s mono.
Using Roland’s unique Analog Circuit Behaviour (ACB) technology, the S-1 takes the functionality of the SH-101 to new heights, adding four voices of polyphony and an in-built suite of effects that includes chorus, delay and reverb.
The S-1 is small, but it’s certainly packed with features. The face includes controls for the LFO, which has four waveforms as well as noise and random options, while there is dedicated sections for oscillator, filter and envelope control.
Running along the bottom of the device are 26 multi-function pads which serve as both a two-octave miniature keyboard and a 64-step sequencer.
The S-1 has obviously been designed for musicians on the go, it’s fitted with a rechargeable battery which means it can be used wherever you are. According to the Roland website, the battery will last around 4.5 hours under continuous use.
In terms of ins and outs, the S-1 has mini jack sync in and outs and mix in and outs on the front panel, MIDI in and out jacks on the back panel alongside a USB-C port that can be used to charge and send audio and MIDI data.
The S-1 joins Roland’s growing fleet of mini synths, the Aira Compact range, which already includes the T-8 Beat Machine, J-6 Chord Synth and the E-4 Voice Tweaker.
